CHOOSE FABRICS MADE WITH RECYCLED FIBERS.
Swimsuits are ususally made with synthetic fabrics so they don’t stretch out when wet. In this case, a good option is to use fabrics made with recycled materials (from fishing nets or plastic water bottles for example). Lucky for you, there’s plenty to choose from with that criteria!; these are still stretchy and comfortable but generate much less non-biodegradable microfibers when washed. Pepita has already started making swimsuits with fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles and wants to reach 100% of its swimsuit production from sustainable fabrics in 2021!
REDUCE TEXTILE WASTE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
After cutting the pieces of fabric that will make up your swimsuits or pants, there is always some leftover fabric. Pepita uses leftover fabric to create products like scrunchies, and bags, reducing the amount of textile waste ending up in landfills.
REUSE MATERIALS:
Another way Pepita has found to reduce waste, is to reuse the paper that is left over from imprinting fabrics, as wrapping paper to protect clothes when shipping them to you. Let’s be always on the lookout for more ideas on how to minimize waste!
